Actor Akshay Kumar opened up about his relationship to success, and said that he has experienced enough failure in life to understand that everything is temporary. In an interview, he also said that he learned a lot about falling down from his father-in-law, the late superstar Rajesh Khanna, whose career witnessed a drastic decline after an initial period of great success. Akshay said that hard work is only one component of accomplishment, and that a lot depends also on luck.

In an interview with Galatta Plus, Akshay was asked what he thinks about failure and success, and he said, “I don’t let anything enter my head. I have seen a lot of people fall down, I have heard many stories. My father-in-law has taught me so much, because he had seen the biggest success in life and then he saw a complete drop. I have heard stories. What I do is, I take knowledge from other people, and I realise that these things are just to be kept at a one-hand’s distance. My job is to just keep working.”

Explaining what he means by the transient nature of success and failure, Akshay said, “In my career, I have given 16-18 hits continuously, then continuously I’ve given 10-12 flops. I don’t take it seriously. I’ve known this since the beginning of my career. It is not yours. It is a crown that will be passed on to others. Today, it’s with you, next Friday it’ll be with somebody else. Success is an amazing thing, but don’t take it seriously; it’ll run.”

Many years ago, Akshay’s mother-in-law, actor Dimple Kapadia, had also spoken about living with Rajesh Khanna during his period of decline. “It was my first encounter in life with failure,” Dimple told India Today in 1985. “When a successful man goes to pieces, his frustration engulfs the entire surroundings. It was a pathetic sight when Rajesh waited at the end of the week for collection figures but the people didn’t have the guts to come and tell him.”

Akshay said that he doesn’t believe success depends only on hard work. “I really believe this. Success is 70% luck and 30% hard work. I have seen worst films becoming superhits, and best films becoming flops… That means there is something called luck, and it plays its own game.” Akshay has had a very difficult post-pandemic period, with only one hit to his name among around 10 releases. His last film, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, turned out to be one of his biggest bombs, grossing only around Rs 100 crore against a budget of over Rs 350 crore.
