Juhi Chawla and Madhuri Dixit were the biggest movie stars in the 1990s. They started their career around the same time, and also experienced success together and as it happens in the entertainment business, they were often pitted against each other. So much so that Juhi once refused a Yash Chopra film because of her “ego problems” with Madhuri.
In an earlier interview with Zoom, Juhi shared, “We started our careers at the same time. She had Tezaab and I had Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in the same year. Throughout our careers, we were always compared to each other. It was always like one of us is number one, the other is number two, or the other way. This went on for a long time.” In the early 1990s, both actors were at the top of their game and delivered many hit films.
Juhi Chawla shared that Yash Chopra offered her Dil To Pagal Hai, but the role she was offered was seen as that of the ‘supporting actor’ which bothered her, and so she refused the film. “After I had worked with Yash ji in Darr, he wanted to make Dil To Pagal Hai, and he wanted to work with Madhuri Dixit. He asked that I do the other role. And I was like ‘I should do the other role?’ I had some insecurity and some ego problems so I didn’t do it. That was the only one opportunity (we had to work together),” she recalled. The role that was offered to Juhi was eventually done by Karisma Kapoor, who got a National Award for her performance in the film. Dil To Pagal Hai also starred Shah Rukh Khan.

Juhi and Madhuri worked together in 2014’s Gulab Gang. At the time, Madhuri told PTI that she never saw Juhi as her competitor. “I never thought of her as my competitor. I never had any qualms about working with anyone. This is my thinking that we are actors not horses running towards one finish line. It is a creative field and we like certain roles and work with people we like. It is not that I have not worked in two-heroine projects earlier. I worked with Preity Zinta (Yeh Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke), Aishwarya Rai (Devdas) and Karisma Kapoor (Dil To Pagal Hai),” she said.
