With the completion of the first half of 2024, cinephiles are busy trying to pick out their favourites from the plethora of motion pictures released in various parts of the world in the past six months. Despite the challenge, the online social cataloguing site Letterboxd too recently took up the task and has revealed its list of the 25 highest-rated feature films as of June 30, 2024. Impressively, a significant number of Indian films have made it onto the list, with the Malayalam industry leading the contributions.
While director Denis Villeneuve’s epic science-fiction film Dune: Part Two, starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, topped the list, Mike Cheslik’s slapstick comedy Hundreds of Beavers, which was self-distributed and released on video on demand (VOD) in April, secured the second spot. Dune: Part Two has a weighted average rating of 4.45 out of five, while Hundreds of Beavers holds a rating of 4.15. The Thai drama How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies, with a rating of 4.15, claimed the third spot and Zendaya’s romantic sports drama Challengers ranked fourth with a rating of 4.04. Director Kiran Rao’s acclaimed comedy-drama Laapataa Ladies (4.03) is the only Indian film in the Top 5.
Other Indian movies on Letterboxd’s list are the survival thriller Manjummel Boys (Malayalam, 7th position), the suspense chamber drama Aattam (Malayalam, 10th position), the period folk horror Bramayugam (Malayalam, 15th position), the action comedy Aavesham (Malayalam, 16th position), the biographical drama Amar Singh Chamkila (Hindi, 20th position), and the romantic comedy Premalu (Malayalam, 25th position).
Academy Award-nominated Indian-origin actor Dev Patel’s debut directorial venture, Monkey Man, secured the 19th spot with a weighted average of 3.75 out of five. Zendaya is the only actor with two films on the list. Animated films Inside Out 2 (18th) and Ultraman: Rising (23rd) also made it into the top tier.
