Kamal Haasan‘s 2000 film Hey Ram is widely considered a path-breaking film in Indian cinema. Haasan, who not only directed and produced the film but also played the lead role, delivered a powerful performance. The film also starred Shah Rukh Khan and on Tuesday, at the trailer launch of Indian 2, Haasan shared that SRK did the film for free.

Talking about their bond with each other, Haasan said, “Let me talk on behalf of Mr SRK because I am sure that he’ll allow me to do that. When we worked together, we were all just people. I don’t see a superstar; he doesn’t see a super director. We are friends. As a matter of fact, Shah Rukh saab made that film (Hey Ram) for free. What more do you need?” This revelation drew a round of applause from the audience.

Haasan continued, “That’s not something a superstar would do. That takes a true fan of cinema, a connoisseur of art, and a brilliant actor. I’m incredibly grateful to him.” Haasan downplayed the whole “superstar” title, saying, “We don’t see ourselves that way. You, the audience, give us these titles, and we shyly accept them.”

Although Hey Ram did not perform exceptionally well at the box office, it received critical acclaim and has since gained a cult following. It was India’s official entry to the Oscars for the Best Foreign Language Film category. The film bravely tackled sensitive topics such as religious intolerance and the impact of violence on individuals and society. Its portrayal of historical figures and events sparked discussions and debates.

Shah Rukh Khan and Kamal Haasan worked together on Hey Ram.

In January, Prasad Corporation of Chennai upgraded the classic film to an impressive 12K resolution. They announced, “Hey Ram (2000), the monumental film crafted by the legendary Kamal Haasan, is now reborn in a ground-breaking 12K resolution. Prasad proudly unites with the iconic Kamal Haasan in preserving cinematic history forever.”
