Filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane has revealed that his 2020 black comedy thriller AK vs AK, which starred Anurag Kashyap and Anil Kapoor, was originally on paper written as a film to be headlined by Kashyap and superstar Aamir Khan. In the Netflix film, Kashyap played an eccentric filmmaker who kidnaps the daughter (Sonam Kapoor) of an ageing film star (Anil Kapoor) after a public feud between the actor-director.

Talking to The Comment Section, Motwane spilled the beans on how AK vs AK underwent several casting changes and revealed how the makers had even approached Saif Ali Khan for the same, who turned it down.

“It was always AK vs AK, so we had to go and cast an actor who’d fit it. We got this idea in 2014 by Avinash (Sampath, c0-writer) and all of us were excited. He had sent it as AK vs AK, which was supposed to be Anurag Kashyap vs Aamir Khan and I immediately thought Aamir toh ye karne wala nahi hai so let’s not go there.

“Then we discussed which AKs we could go to. Then the AK got dropped and we went to meet Saif for the same, he didn’t do it. Then we shot with Shahid in Mumbai for the film, which was great, fantastic. I wish that would have stayed.”

Motwane recalled it was Kashyap, who thought Anil Kapoor would be the perfect fit for the part. The filmmaker said they needed to take an actor who is older so that the clash of “these two different worlds” would be clear.

“Someone having to prove a point. Cinematically Anil Kapoor had a point to prove that he was still relevant. Then I went to Amsterdam where Avinash lives and in three days we made it into an Anil Kapoor kind of a film. I came back shaky, said, ‘Sir ek hai kuch, will you read it?’ I was expecting he would read the script and throw it away!

“But he called me and said he had really liked it and wanted to do it. It just happened very quickly. Anurag wrote the dialogues for himself, so all that self-deprecating humour is all him,” Motwane said.

The filmmaker has wrapped up filming the screen adaptation of the 2019 book Black Warrant: Confessions of a Tihar Jailer. He has also directed the ‘screen life’ thriller Control, starring Ananya Panday. Both the projects await a release date.
