Actors and directors seldom share a bond that goes beyond filmmaking in the film industry. After filmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently interview opened up about a time when celebrity designers didn’t want to make a suit for Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the actor has shared why he respects Anurag’s filmmaking and his significance in his acting career spanning 25 years.

Nawazuddin’s film Gangs Of Wasseypur, directed by Anurag Kashyap, was screened at the 2012 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, an important venue for innovative and adventurous filmmaking. Kashyap had shared how designers had declined to make a suit for Nawazuddin’s big day because of the “way he looked”.

Nawazuddin says that he was hurt when he was subjected to the kind of rejection basis his looks, but he is now happy that people recognise his talent and love him. In an interview with indianexpress.com Nawazuddin said, “It was Gangs Of Wasseypur. Gangs had not released then. Of course bura lagega (I was hurt) that people have that kind of approach to an actor. I felt ajeeb (weird).”

The actor then thanked Kashyap for introducing him to a world he never knew existed before he became an actor and taking him international. He said, “With time people saw my work and started appreciating it. If your work is good, people will appreciate it, thanks to Anurag Kashyap who introduced me to a big platform. When I went to Cannes, there were so many people who had seen my work. A lot of the films that he has directed and I have acted in, have gone to Cannes, so Anurag is a special director for me.”

Nawazuddin and Anurag have collaborated on several projects that went on to become iconic. The two also worked together on Sacred Games and Raman Raghav 2.0 among other films.

Nawazuddin shares that he is very fond of the filmmaker. When told that Anurag, while opening up about the low phase in his life, had shared how he and Taapsee Pannu would check up on him and that helped him in his battle with depression and alcohol addiction, Nawaz said, “Anurag and I are not even friends, frankly speaking. If we sit together we might not even talk to each other for hours. We are like that. We have flown together, travelled together for 5-6 hours without saying a word, maybe we’ll ask  if you have matchsticks, or come, let’s eat something or drink. We only discuss these things. We don’t talk much. But Anurag has a special place in my heart. I always want him to be healthy and make films even if he doesn’t cast me in them. Anurag should always keep making films. Kabhi koi aanch nahi aani chaahiye Anurag ko bass (Anurag should never have any problems),” he concluded.
