After portraying a soldier in Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Akshay Kumar returns with a mission to break class and caste barriers by launching the country’s cheapest airline in his upcoming film Sarfira. Directed by Sudha Kongara, the makers unveiled the film’s trailer on Tuesday. It is a remake of Sudha’s Tamil film Soorarai Pottru (2020), which starred Suriya in the lead role.

Based on a true story, Sarfira features Akshay Kumar as Vir Mhatre, who vows to launch India’s first low-cost airline with ₹1 tickets for the common man. The trailer begins with Vir declaring that he is broke and in debt but has an idea that will not only change his future but also impact many ordinary citizens. With this vision, he approaches Paresh Goswami (Paresh Rawal), a tycoon in the airline industry, and pitches the idea of starting India’s first low-cost airline. However, a class and caste-conscious Paresh dismisses his idea.

Undeterred, Vir says, “I am the aam aadmi who is dreaming of flying with Rs 1 in his pocket.” Despite facing backlash from government officials and politicians, who criticise and reject his proposal, he continues to pursue his dream. The trailer also features a cameo appearance by Tamil actor Suriya, who is seen smiling and nodding in approval at Vir.

In recent years, Akshay Kumar’s career has seen multiple flops, with his last film, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, being a massive box office failure. However, the actor promises a comeback with Sarfira. Sharing the trailer on Instagram, Akshay wrote, “Sapne woh nahi jo aap sote huye dekhte hain, sapne woh hote hain jo aapko sone hi nahi dete. Ek aise hi sapne ki kahani hai Sarfira (Dreams are not what come to you in your sleep; they are the reason you cannot sleep).”

In addition to Akshay and Paresh Rawal, the film also stars Radhikka Madan. Sarfira is produced by Aruna Bhatia (Cape of Good Films), South superstars Suriya and Jyotika (2D Entertainment), and Vikram Malhotra (Abundantia Entertainment).

Is Sarfira a real story?

Soorarai Pottru is a dramatised account of the life of Captain GR Gopinath, retired Army officer and founder of the Air Deccan airline. The film was inspired by his 2011 autobiography, Simply Fly: A Deccan Odyssey, which showcases his story from riding a bullock cart to owning India’s first low-cost airline.

The film will release in theatres on July 12.
