Shah Rukh Khan has been a Hindi film hero for over 30 years, and while the actor is known for playing quintessential romantic leads, he has played a few villainous roles as well. But, SRK has largely stayed away from glorifying negative roles in the latter part of his career. At a recent event, where Shah Rukh Khan was honoured as ‘The Indian of the Year’, the actor said that if he were to play a negative character, he would make sure that the character “dies a dog’s death.” It appeared that the actor was taking a dig at director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s controversial blockbuster Animal, which has been criticised for glorifying the morally reprehensible behaviour of its protagonist.

At a News18 event, Shah Rukh said, “I am a guy who is hopeful and tells happy stories. The heroes I play do good things, they give hope and happiness. If I play a bad guy, I make sure he suffers a lot, he dies a dog’s death, because I believe goodness begets goodness. And I believe badness deserves a kick in the back side.” He continued, “I should play honest roles that give people courage to dream. I should keep working hard quietly with the hope that life doesn’t topple my apple cart anytime soon.”

After the success of the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Animal, many pointed out the film’s misogynistic attitude towards women and its glorification of violence. Recently, Javed Akhtar also criticised the film at the 9th Ajanta-Ellora International Film Festival, where he said, “If there’s a film in which a man asks a woman to lick his shoe or if a man says it’s okay to slap a woman… and the film is a super hit, that’s dangerous.”

Vanga, whose film has made over Rs 900 crore worldwide, has been defending his film since the release. After Javed’s comments, the social media handle of Animal responded to the veteran writer and called his art “false.” They wrote, “Writer of your calibre cannot understand the betrayal of a lover (Between Zoya & Ranvijay) then all your art form is big FALSE 🙃 & If a woman (betrayed and fooled by a man in the name of love) would have said “lick my shoe” then you guys would have celebrated it by calling it feminism. Let love be free from the politics of gender. Let’s just call them lovers. LOVER cheated and lied. LOVER said lick my shoe. Period @Javedakhtarjadu.”
