The resurgence of 90s actors in films and streaming is a happy sign for actor Sanjay Kapoor, who has himself been on the rise with his appearance in some of the biggest movies and shows. The actor says if 90s stars are getting consecutive work, it is because they have years of credibility behind them which has kept them going.

Recently, actor Manisha Koirala walked away with immense acclaim for her performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi. Actors like Bobby Deol (featuring in Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Animal), Raveena Tandon and Kajol have also made their way to OTT space, headlining shows.

In an interview with Mid-day, when asked about the resurgence of several 90s stars, Sanjay Kapoor said these actors have been doing incredible work for decades. The actor has himself featured in films like Katrina Kaif-Vijay Sethupathi starrer Merry Christmas, Sara Ali Khan starrer Murder Mubarak and the recent ZEE5 thriller House of Lies.

The actor said, “These actors haven’t got work today by chance. Manisha had done great work even before, be it Bombay or 1942: A Love Story. Sometimes, you go through a transitional phase—you aren’t young enough to play a youngster, nor old enough to play an older character. With OTT, people are getting more opportunities. Also, you never heard anything wrong about all the actors you’ve mentioned.”

“You heard their names only with regard to their work. These actors never lost hope or confidence in themselves. Bobby has spoken about it himself. It’s not that all the ’90s actors have made a comeback. There were others who lost their focus. Nobody is here to make your life; you have to build your own. Nobody is giving you a chance just because they love you,” he added.

Sanjay Kapoor said even the work he has done in the recent past is “not by chance”. Featuring in Shahid Kapoor starrer Bloody Daddy, Made in Heaven 2 or Merry Christmas has been a result of relentless hard work.

“I have worked my ass off. It’s 30 years of experience, focus and perseverance [at work]. In the last one year, I have worked with directors Sriram Raghavan, Zoya Akhtar, Neeraj Ghaywan, Prakash Jha and Homi Adajania. People are happy even if they get to work with two or three such directors in their lifetime.”

On the persona front, Sanjay Kapoor’s daughter Shanaya Kapoor is now gearing up for her screen debut with Mohanlal’s Vrushabha. The actor said his daughter has seen that Bollywood “is not a bed of roses” and added that she would be “mentally strong” as she has seen his journey in the industry.
