The ongoing debate on the voyeuristic and invasive practices of the paparazzi has gained further prominence, as Mona Singh and Neha Sharma recently condemned the objectification of women’s bodies, calling it “disturbing.” In an interview with News18, Mona, who is known for her work in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, condemned the intrusive coverage of female actors, where they are scrutinised, zoomed in on, and filmed from inappropriate angles without their consent.

She highlighted the unsettling double standards in the coverage, with women subjected to invasive and disrespectful scrutiny while men are spared. “They keep focusing on women’s bodies inappropriately. Will they do this to a man by zooming into their crotch when they’re walking? No, they won’t. But they do that to every woman,” she added.

Mona, who is currently promoting her upcoming film Munjya, also criticised the paparazzi for seemingly anticipating wardrobe malfunctions to sensationalise their coverage. “Whether you attend an event or go to an award function, these are the kinds of videos you keep seeing of yourself. I think every woman actor should stand up and raise their voice against it. It’s really not cool what they do. It’s almost like they wait far some faux pas to happen,” she urged.

Neha also expressed her disappointment with being photographed from inappropriate angles by the paparazzi. She condemned this invasion of privacy, acknowledging its impact on her well-being. She also discussed how this issue infringes upon women’s freedom, particularly regarding their choice of attire. “There are days when you don’t want to be seen, so you take a break, like I did recently. These are things you have to do to stay relevant. It’s important to be seen in today’s time. As for the angles, it does get distasteful. As a woman, you also lose your freedom to dress the way you want to. When you are in the public eye, you do have to be careful as sometimes things go out of line,” the actor told India Today in a recent interview, adding that she remains empathetic towards the paparazzi, recognising the financial challenges they face.

Recently, several female celebrities, including Mrunal Thakur, Nora Fatehi, Palak Tiwari, and Janhvi Kapoor, have spoken out against the intrusive behaviour of paparazzi, particularly their tendency to zoom in on their bodies without permission.

In a recent interview with The Indian Express, Janhvi also spoke about being photographed  from “wrong angles.” She added that while some members of the paparaazi respect her requests, others violate her privacy. “But some of them have also been incentivised to do these things. Like they’ll take a normal video of you but in the cover photo they’ll use the picture with the wrong angle, the ones that look the most sensational because it is clickbait, especially when it is a woman. That’s when you feel not most comfortable. I can’t even walk confidently because there is a constant commentary going on in my head that ‘bachke rehna galat angle aa sakta hai (be cautious you are being clicked from wrong angles)’. It’s sad, unfortunate, and I hope better sense prevails. It’s not respectful,” she rued.
