In the ’90s, actors Meenakshi Sheshadri and Rishi Kapoor were a hit onscreen pair. Having shared the screen space in films like Damini, Bade Ghar Ki Beti, Ghar Parivar, Gharana, Sadhna and Vijay, the co-stars became friends in real life, too. Meenakshi, who is all set to make a comeback to Hindi cinema after a two-decade sabbatical, describes her equation with the late actor as ‘informal’.

Any guesses who this is? I didn’t recognise her for a moment. What a lovely surprise. Name in 30 mins no hints. pic.twitter.com/RbYfF1l7Wx

“Rishi ji was amazing. He has worked with people of so many generations and made them feel at home, which he did with me. Sometimes we also shared people who were working for both of us and helping both of us. He lived so close by in Pali Hill that I could just walk from my house to his house and spend some time with him and Neetu ji. I think he was the only actor with whom I could do that. I met him off-set and informally,” the Hero actor told Zoom in an interview.

Rishi, known for his unfiltered opinion and cracking jokes on his co-stars, would often pull Meenakshi’s leg who is a trained classical dancer. “He used to say, ‘Kabhi kabhi tumhara dance mujhe samajh nahi ata. Tumhara Bharatanatyam kam karo.’ (Sometimes I don’t understand your dance. Don’t do too much of Bharatanatyam).

The actor, who quit Bollywood and was away from the limelight for almost 26 years and lived with her husband and kids in Dallas, recalled the time when the Bobby actor helped her make her X (formerly Twitter) account and also gave advice on her comeback. She shared, “Rishi ji was that person with whom I shared 100 per cent comfort and could ask him what if I wanted to make a comeback. When I started my Twitter account, I asked Rishi to help me and pass on some of his followers to me, and he obliged. He never questioned, and he never made excuses. I’m grateful to him.”

For the unversed, back in 2015, the veteran actor shared a photograph of Meenakshi on X and asked his fans to guess who she was. “Any guesses who this is? I didn’t recognise her for a moment. What a lovely surprise. Name in 30 mins no hints,” Rishi tweeted. His tweet raised a lot of curiosity among fans. He further added, “Damini, MS, lives happily with hubby Harish Mysore and 2 kids, a girl and a boy in Dallas, U.S. Visiting relatives, can work in film if a good role.”

The Jurm actor also spoke about not being in touch with the Ambar Akbar Anthony actor’s son, Ranbir Kapoor, adding that she regretted not connecting with him. “It’s unfortunate that I haven’t been in touch with Rishi ji’s son, Ranbir, and we don’t know each other very well. I hope to rectify that and meet him, especially now since he’s married and has a kid,” added the actress.

Ranbir Kapoor plays the lead role in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal.

In the same interview, the 60-year-old actor also spoke about identifying Rishi in Ranbir’s performance.”Rishi ji was given the tag of a chocolate boy, and Amitabh ji (Bachchan) was called the angry young man. Both of them were getting stuck doing similar kinds of roles. Then they both decided to take a break and come back to doing better roles. I saw the same intensity in Ranbir’s eyes in Animal that I had seen in Rishi Ji’s eyes in Agneepath,” she added.
