Actor Kajal Aggarwal, who is gearing up for the release of Satyabhama, recently discussed the need for southern filmmakers to broaden their scope regarding film genres and roles for married female actors. In an interview with Galatta Plus, she addressed the disparity between the roles offered to female actors in the South compared to Bollywood stars like Deepika Padukone or Alia Bhatt, particularly in romantic leads or action films.

However, Kajal emphasised that despite her marriage, childbirth and a short sabbatical, she didn’t give in to any roles that were offered to her. “I have stuck to my beliefs. As actors, we go through ups and downs but even in my low period, when I was anxious, I didn’t just do anything that came my way,” said the Special 26 actor, adding that that period was stressful. Opening up about going through her fair share of anxiety immediately after postpartum and during her maternity break, she added, “I was worried, ‘Oh! My God, What am I going to do? Is it ever going to be the same for me ever again? How am I going to manage?’ I wondered if I would ever get those lucrative offers ever again.”

She further credited her perseverance to her resilience and returning to film with “meaty roles” and the choice of her director after childbirth. “For example, Kanappa. I wanted to be a part of this film because I love mythology.”

Kajal, who shot for Indian 2 just two months postpartum, said she suffered from separation anxiety and “mom guilt” as she returned to work. In an interview with Hindustan Times, she further revealed that she sought therapy to deal with her anxiety and negative emotions. “You feel bad, insecure, threatened, scared, nervous, you feel all of that in double intensity. I took therapy to deal with it and was on anti-depressants when it was safe to take them. Nothing much changed after I got married but motherhood changed me as a person. Having a baby is challenging.” Despite the difficulties, she emphasised her commitment to prioritising her family, stating, “My husband (Gautam) can always reach me, no matter how busy I am. I have maintained that from day one.”

In Satyabhama, slated for release on June 7, Kajal portrays a police officer, marking a new milestone in her career.  She also stars in Indian 2 alongside Kamal Haasan, Siddharth, and Rakul Preet Singh, set for release on July 12. While she was also set to feature in Tathagata Singha’s Uma, there have been no recent updates on the project.
