Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao’s Mr & Mrs Mahi was released in cinemas on May 31. Directed by Sharan Sharma, the romantic sports drama opened to generally positive reviews by critics, audiences and cricket fans, and exceeded expectations at the box office on its first day of release. The film tells the love story of a couple that are hardcore fans of former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Mr & Mrs Mahi earned Rs 7 crore at the box office on day one, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. Rajkummar Rao’s last film, Srikanth, which is still running in cinemas, had earned Rs 2.25 crore on its opening day. The movie has also done excellent business in the national multiplex chains, as its release coincided with Cinema Lovers’ Day and the audiences could watch the movie at Rs 99 to Rs 199.

The film observed an overall 56.15 percent Hindi occupancy, with most people catching the night shows. In Mumbai, where there were 691 shows, the occupancy stood at 55.5 percent. In Delhi and NCR, with 789 shows, a 61.5 percent occupancy was observed. However, the highest occupancy was observed in Jaipur, with 86 percent for 103 shows. Other films that released along with Mr & Mrs Mahi on Friday were Divya Khossla’s Savi, helmed by Abhinay Deo, and children’s action-animation film Chhota Bheem and the Curse of Damyaan.

The Hindi film industry has been struggling this year. However, the trade is hopeful that Mr & Mrs Mahi’s box office performance will turn things around after a lull period with hardly any films releasing for the last few weeks. Last month, Rajkummar Rao’s Srikanth and Manoj Bajpayee’s Bhaiyya Ji hit the big screens. While Srikanth has earned over Rs 40 crore nett in three weeks, Bhaiyya Ji has failed to create any buzz, and its box office earnings stand at Rs 8.2 crore after a week of release.

The Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta gave Mr & Mrs Mahi a two-and-a-half star rating. and wrote in her review, “Janhvi Kapoor-Rajkummar Rao film gives us a rom-com nestled in India’s favourite sports, which in turn is nestled in the tropes of the family-entertainer movie.”
