In 2021, Christian Eriksen collapsed on pitch during Denmark’s first Euros fixture in Copenhagen. It was an incident that would snowball into an inspirational run from the Danes, who ended up as one of the four semifinalists. For Eriksen though, the tournament came to an end midway through their first fixture.

Three years later, Eriksen has made his way back into the Danish squad for this summer’s European Championship finals in Germany.

Following his cardiac arrest in 2021, Eriksen was subsequently fitted with a pacemaker device that enabled him to continue his career. The former Tottenham Hotspur and Inter midfielder has since featured for English Premier League teams such as Manchester United and Brentford.

Eriksen is one of the only 11 players to have played in more than 100 games for Denmark. The other active player to have done so, Simon Kjaer (131) – Eriksen’s close friend, who was also hailed for his quick reaction on pitch to come to Eriksen’s aid during his hour of need – will captain the team again.

“It’s hard to disappoint someone, these are boyhood dreams that come up short, [but] I’m very happy with the squad we have,” Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand told reporters after announcing the squad.
