Filmmaker Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD is one of the most anticipated films of 2024. In a recent conversation, Ashwin spoke about the film’s take on religion, especially during a time when the country is polarized, and shared why he isn’t concerned about this aspect. The film has taken certain elements from mythology like the lead character’s name Kalki, and even Amitabh Bachchan’s character name, Ashwatthama, among other things.

In a chat with Deadline, Ashwin spoke about the film’s religious angle. The publication claimed the director said the film “does not involve any characters actively worshipped by large numbers of Hindus”. Ashwin was quoted as saying, “We can take it as extremely religious or we can take it as the story of somebody who was born with a lot of power, didn’t know what to do with it, and found his mentor in the process.”

He also emphasised that the film’s story should be dealt with subjectively and not solely through the prism of religion. “Of course, if you tell it in the Indian context there will be a bit of devotion and emotion, but I feel any story can be dealt with subjectively without bringing a religious connotation,” he said.

Kalki 2898 AD stars some of the most popular actors in the country. The film features Prabhas in the lead role, along with Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Kamal Haasan, and Disha Patani. After the film’s posters and teaser were released, fans started comparing Prabhas’ film to Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya’s Dune series. Responding to the comparisons, Ashwin had earlier said, “It’s because of the sand. They noticed the film has sand in it, no? Basically, whenever there’s sand, it’ll look like Dune.”

Kalki 2898 AD will have its global premiere on June 27.
