It appears that Mission: Impossible fans will have to wait a bit longer to catch the eighth instalment in the Tom Cruise-headlined franchise, as the movie’s production has reportedly been delayed following a malfunction while filming with a Rs 207.8 crore ($25 million) submarine. According to various news outlets, the incident occurred when the gimbal being used to lower the 120-ft structure, jammed under its weight, requiring repair.

As a result, the film’s production has been stalled for a couple of weeks, causing its already enormous budget, which is reportedly nearing Rs 3,324.88 crore ($400 million), to increase even further. “They’re not happy as it puts production behind, which costs a lot of money per day,” a source told The Mirror.

A direct sequel to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023), marking the return of Cruise as protagonist Ethan Hunt, the untitled eighth Mission: Impossible film has faced significant hurdles since day one. Following delays caused by last year’s Hollywood writers’ strike, which brought the movie’s production to a halt in July 2023, the makers managed to resume filming only in March this year.

According to reports, prior to the strike, director Christopher McQuarrie stated that they had already shot about 40 per cent of the movie. He also mentioned back then that the biggest and most complicated sequence of the film had yet to be shot. Originally scheduled for a summer 2024 release, distributors Paramount Pictures had earlier postponed the movie’s release date to May 2025. Now, with more delays, it remains to be seen when the movie will be released.

Besides Cruise, the film also stars Ving Rhames, Henry Czerny, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Hayley Atwell, Shea Whigham, and Pom Klementieff, all reprising their roles from previous films in the series.

This will be director McQuarrie’s fourth Mission: Impossible film since joining the franchise in 2015, which began in 1996 with the first film directed by Brian De Palma. Dead Reckoning Part One experienced similar difficulties, with the budget reportedly ballooning to nearly $300 million because of pandemic-related delays and Cruise’s exacting nature. The movie under-performed at the box office, having been released immediately before Barbie and Oppenheimer.
