Ratna Pathak Shah, who is known for not shying away from expressing her views, recently revealed what she loves, hates and tolerates about her husband and actor Naseeruddin Shah. In a recent interview at the 77th edition of Cannes Film Festival, Ratna talked about that one thing that she hasn’t seen in others, which is great about Naseeruddin but also extremely hard to live with.

Talking to Brut, Ratna who accompanied her husband Naseeruddin at Cannes for the screening of his 1976 film Manthan, was asked what does she love, hate and tolerate about her husband. To this, Ratna chuckled and said, “Oh boy! All in one? Love, hate, tolerate altogether? or can it be different?”

She added, “I love his deep involvement with acting. I can love, hate and tolerate, all three in that. Largely, love because it’s a very special feature. Naseer cannot be bothered with anything except for performance and working towards the performance. It’s an attitude that I haven’t seen in others. I am making this statement after giving it some thought. I haven’t seen this focus in others. But, it’s hard also to live with.”

Actors Ratna Pathak Shah and Naseeruddin Shah have been married to each other for over 42 years after having tying the knot in 1982. The couple first met during the rehearsal of Satyadev Dubey’s play Sambhog se Sanyas Tak in 1975. In an interview with NDTV, talking about his love story with Ratna, Naseer said, “All great romances of theatres begin at a rehearsal.” According to the actor, their first meeting happened at a juice stall outside the National College in Mumbai, and for Naseer “sparks flew right away”. However, Ratna didn’t pay attention to him.

Eventually, she fell for the actor as they spent more time togehter while rehearsing for ‘Sambhog se Sanyas Tak.’ Talking about her relationship with Naseer, Ratna told indianexpress.com, “The play was very significantly titled Sambhog se Sanyas Tak. That is the story of our life. Bas sanyaas lena baaki hai.”

After dating for over 6 years, the couple decided to tie the knot in 1982. It was Naseeruddin Shah’s second marriage. He was previously married to Surekha Sikri’s sister Manara Sikri aka Parveen Murad. He has a daughter Heeba Shah from his first marriage. Meanwhile, Ratna and Naseer welcomed two sons — Vivaan and Imaad Shah, respectively.

Ratna in an interview with Hauterrfly revealed her secret to successful marriage. She said, “Naseer said to me very early on in our relationship that it’s good idea never to label a relationship, husband, wife, lover, girlfriend, boyfriend. Why lablel if you can just keep yourself more at the level of human beings, interact. It helps, and luckily, we were able to do that with out children as well.”
