On Mother’s Day, former actor and author Twinkle Khanna reflected on her relationship with her mother, Dimple Kapadia, in a candid and heartwarming tribute that underlines the power of acceptance and unconditional love. In her column, published in The Times of India, Twinkle revealed that instead of the traditional flowers or candy, Twinkle chose a more profound gift for her mother this year – a gift she “received in her forties.”

Recognising the limitations of idolising her mother on a “saintly pedestal of motherhood,” Twinkle realised that by placing her mother on a pedestal, she was setting her up for an inevitable fall. After having her own children – Aarav and Nitara –  and with time and understanding, she chose to give Dimple the gift of acceptance, acknowledging that as mothers, they are bound to make mistakes, but their love for their children remains unwavering. She describes that a mother must “love their children dearly” and “do our best within our inherent limitations.”

However, Twinkle humorously admits that complete “absolution” is still withheld until Dimple lets go of her peculiar obsession with Twinkle’s hair. From major life events to everyday moments, Dimple has always seemed more concerned with taming Twinkle’s unruly locks than revelling in her daughter’s accomplishments – a trait that even Einstein’s mother shared. She says there isn’t an occasion in her life when her mother, Dimple, “hasn’t started fretting about her hair and with a worried frown,” every time reaching out to “put stray strands in place.”

The Mela, actor, who is married to Akshay Kumar,  writes that she attempted to conclude her thoughts on motherhood, but she was interrupted by her own little one’s (Nitara) request for a screen time password.

In this sincere and relatable tribute, Twinkle urged her readers to reflect on our relationships with their own mothers and appreciate the inherent imperfections that make these bonds both challenging and beautiful.

Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia got married in March 1973 and Twinkle was born on December 29 of the same year.
