The sudden demise of legendary filmmaker Sangeeth Sivan, known for his Malayalam films such as Yodha and Gandharvam, as well as Bollywood movies such as Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 and Kyaa Kool Hai Hum, has come as a shocker to the industry. Since the news of his passing arrived, notable figures from across the country have been taking to social media to express their condolences.

Among the first to react were his frequent collaborators, Malayalam superstar Mohanlal and Bollywood icon Sunny Deol, who shared heartfelt tributes recalling their close relationship with the filmmaker. “Beloved Sangeeth Sivan, who left an indelible mark in film direction, was more than a friend to me, a loving brother,” Mohanlal noted in a long post on Facebook.

“The films Yodha, Gandharvam and Nirnayam remain imprinted in the hearts of every Malayalee because all of them bore the touch of his immense talent. The cultural sphere of Kerala will fondly remember Sangeeth, the great genius, for as long as it exists, and the characters he created will remain immortal. Bidding a painful farewell to my dear brother,” he added while sharing a picture of the filmmaker.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) to share two photos of himself with the director, Sunny Deol wrote, “Shocked to hear about the passing away of my dear friend Sangeeth Sivan. I can’t believe that you are no longer amongst us, but you will always be with us in our hearts and memories. Om Shanti, my friend, may your family get the strength to overcome your loss.” In one of the pictures, Sunny’s younger brother Bobby can also be seen alongside them.

Sangeeth’s younger brother and National Award-winning cinematographer-director Santosh Sivan also paid homage to the filmmaker. Sharing a photo bearing the report of Sangeeth’s death on Instagram, Santosh wrote, “My dearest brother, may he rest in peace… God Bless.”

Kerala State Minister for Culture and Youth Affairs Saji Cherian honoured Sangeeth’s cinematic contributions, extending his deepest condolences to the grieving family.

Actor-director Riteish Deshmukh, with whom Sangeeth worked in movies such as Kyaa Kool Hai Hum (2005) and Apna Sapna Money Money (2006), also paid his last respects to the director. “Deeply saddened and shocked to know that Sangeeth Sivan Sir is no more. As a newcomer, all you want is someone to believe in you and take a chance… can’t thank him enough for Kyaa Kool Hai Hum & Apna Sapna Money Money. Soft-spoken, gentle, and a wonderful human being. Am heartbroken today, my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, his wife, kids, brothers. I will miss you Da !!!!! And your infectious laughter!!! Rest in Glory,” he wrote on X.

Former state health minister, assembly speaker, and chief of the Kerala PCC VM Sudheeran also offered his condolences on the occasion.
