What happens now to a celebrity who must have planned and prepped for a relaxed vacation in Maldives? Comedian Vir Das has a joke. Amid rising social media spat over Lakshadweep vs Maldives, which has turned into a diplomatic row, Vir Das shared a funny take on Monday.

On January 4, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared images on X from his visit to Lakshadweep islands. His post promoting tourism in Lakshadweep set off a social media war between Maldivian politicians, government officials and Indian social media users.

Many Indian celebrities came out and tweeted their support to explore tourism in India, while Akshay Kumar highlighted “racist and hateful” comments said by public figures of Maldives and called for “dignity first”. Interestingly, Akshay and his family were holidaying in Maldives last week.

Taking to X, Vir Das wrote his observation about Maldives, which has fast emerged as the vacation hub of Indian celebrities and social media influencers. “Firstly, happy Lakshadweep is getting some love! Secondly, Somewhere in the Maldives, right now, is an Indian celebrity/influencer, who didn’t eat carbs for two weeks, took the best vacation photos ever, and is TERRIFIED to post them :-),” he wrote.

Incidentally, actor couple Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover are in Maldives for their vacation. Bipasha celebrated her birthday on the island with her family and has been actively posting pictures from her holidays, even as #BoycottMaldives picks up steam on social media.

Shortly after PM Modi’s visit, many Bollywood celebrities came out and supported Lakshadweep tourism, including Salman Khan, Shraddha Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, John Abraham and Randeep Hood among others.
