In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Vijay revealed that he was “not comfortable” filming in two languages. “We tried in some scenes to express differently in Tamil and Hindi, some details to differentiate between the two. The way I work is, when I am in front of the camera, I feel in my lifetime I won’t get another chance to perform this scene. But here I did get another chance, so I tried somewhere to do it differently. It is exciting but still…. it is boring. Because you are repeating the same scenes!”

Katrina, however, said she had a completely opposite experience. “It was challenging and terrifying! That’s the word I would use. ‘Terror’.” The actor then elaborated how the challenge in filming in two languages is to be comfortable enough with what one is saying, “even if it is not a language you are familiar with.”

“To try and relive the emotions and not get stuck in the head thinking if it is right, if you will remember the next word. But it is very toug, hats off to those who do it. A lot of actresses do movies in Tamil and Telugu and I don’t think those actresses know the language. It is very challenging, especially because this is a dialogue heavy film,” she added.

Filmmaker Sriram Raghavan said the team shot the Hindi version first. “We did it in two languages because I am a Tamilian and I had a dream of making a Tamil film also and here was a possibility… It is hard for me, but much much harder for her and possibly for him, because they have to do the same thing again. She had to find a way to say the lines right–eventually someone will dub–and give the same emotions. That was not easy,” the director added.

Merry Christmas is the first film of the filmmaker after his 2018 superhit crime thriller Andhadhun, which starred Ayushmann Khurrana. The film is releasing on the big screen after being pushed multiple times in the past.
