Sanjay Leela Bhansali‘s OTT debut series Heeramandi dropped on Netflix recently. While the show has show has opened to mixed reviews from critics, television actor Sheezan Khan, popular for his roles in TV shows like Jodha Akbar and Ali Baba: Dastaan-E-Kabul has criticised the inability of actors to speak Urdu in the period drama series is based on the lives of tawaifs at the red-light district of Heeramandi in Lahore during the Indian independence movement against the British Raj. The show stars Manisha Koirala, Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Shekhar Suman, Adhyayan Suman, Fardeen Khan, Farida Jalal among others.

Sheezan took to Instagram and said that Farida Jalal was the only actor who could speak eloquent Urdu on the show. He wrote, “Apart from Farida Jalal ji! Nobody could speak “urdu” in SLB’s Heeramandi! Kisi Ka Nuqta, kha, qaf apni jagah pe nahi hai!! Kyu bhai kyu?? Urdu ke saath itni naainsaafi. Disappointed. (Nobody could pronounce it well. Why brother? Why such injustice with Urdu?)”

Heeramandi, one of the most anticipated shows by Bhansali has opened to mixed reviews from critics and audiences. The Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta called the show “Part history, part myth, full-on Sanjay Leela Bhansali” and gave it a 2 and a half star rating.

Bhansali’s next project is a film starring Vicky Kaushal, Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor, and is titled Love and War.
