British-Pakistani actor Alyy Khan recalled working with John Abraham, and spoke about the Bollywood’s star’s disciplined work ethic. He said that John lives like a monk, and that’s the secret to his sustained success in the film business. Alyy played a supporting role in Zoya Akhtar’s Luck By Chance, which featured John in a cameo. He collaborated with John again on the upcoming film Tehran, which is when he was struck by his discipline.

In an interview with Dawn News, Alyy was asked if John actually has the talent, or if he has been coasting on his physique for all these years. “If you don’t have the talent, you cannot survive for so many years.” Alyy’s wife, Chandni, who was also a part of the interview, said, “The reason he can take off his shirt at this age is because he hasn’t tasted sugar in 25 years.” John is 51.

Alyy explained, “I asked him, ‘What’s your poison then?’ And he said he only has sugar-free alternatives. I asked, ‘Alcohol’, and he said, ‘Never tasted it’. I asked, ‘Cigarettes?’ And he said he’s never smoked. Alyy then asked, “But you must have some vice… Is this body a result of only protein and meat?” And John told him that he’s also a vegetarian.

John is well known for his physique, which the directors of his films ensure that he flaunts on camera regularly. Chatting with Shilpa Shetty on her show a couple of years ago, he shared more details about his strict lifestyle. He said that he tries to lead a ‘farmer’s life’, and stressed on the importance of diet. “You can eat healthy if you think like that. You have to be goal-oriented. Diet, and eating right are the most important. I believe and always say that fitness is like a tripod stand. Good food, good exercise, and good sleep. Without any of them, the tripod falls.”

John said that he wakes up at 4:30 am every morning, and hasn’t tasted his favourite dessert – kaju kalti – in nearly three decades. “It has been 27 years. It has been a long time. I do not have aerated drinks. I believe, and I guess, you do the same… that sugar is the biggest poison in the world. More than cigarette smoking,” he said.
