Aamir Khan first appeared in the movies in the 1988 film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and it was with this film that Aamir was introduced as the next-gen Hindi film hero. Aamir starred alongside Juhi Chawla in the film and in a recent interview, Makarand Deshpande, who also had a small part in the film, recalled the time when he actually laughed in Aamir’s face when he announced himself as the hero. Makarand also recalled the time when he convinced director Mansoor Khan to let him beat up Aamir in the movie.

In a chat with YouTuber Siddharth Kannan, Makarand said that he had known of Aamir for some time as the young actor would often assist in backstage work during Makarand’s plays. When Makarand was asked to go and meet Mansoor Khan for a part in the film, he wasn’t aware that Aamir came from the same family so when he ran into Aamir at the office, he was quite shocked. “He coyly said I am the hero. I looked at him and I laughed at his face,” he recalled with a laugh.

Makarand then recalled the shooting schedule in Ooty and said that when he first saw Juhi Chawla during the shoot, he wasn’t aware that she was the leading lady. QSQT was Juhi’s first film as well. He recalled whistling when Juhi was walking by and said he was quite surprised when he met her at the meet-and-greet with the rest of the cast. “We were then called to meet the cast then and when we got there, we found that the woman was Juhi Chawla. Juhi said they have been cast correctly,” he recalled.

Makarand laughed as he shared another anecdote from the film’s shoot. “I once convinced Mansoor to allow to beat up Aamir in the movie,” he said. Makarand said that Aamir was quite lean at the time but Makarand had actually been training for martial arts. “I showed him some martial arts moves and he was impressed,” he said. Eventually, Mansoor was so convinced about it that he believed that Aamir would not be able to beat Makarand. “So you beat him,” he told Makarand.

Later, however, the fight was reshot. When Makarand asked why, he was told that when Nasir Hussain saw the footage, he reminded Mansoor that the ‘hero’ can’t get beaten up this way. “When Nasir saab saw the footage, he said ‘Mansoor, he is the hero. If he gets beaten up this early, then how will this work? Let him fight a little so he can be the hero’. Then we reshot the fight where he hits me a bit,” he recalled.
