Singer-composer Arijit Singh’s fan base knows no bounds, ranging from common listeners like us to the biggest of celebrities, transcending language and geographical barriers. The turnout for his recent Dubai concert, where thousands gathered to witness his performance live, underscores this broad appeal. Among the attendees was Pakistani actor Mahira Khan, who won over many Indian hearts with her performance in director Rahul Dholakia’s Raees, starring opposite Bollywood’s Baadshah Shah Rukh Khan.

Now, a video from the concert venue has surfaced online and since gone viral, showing Arijit proudly introducing Mahira to the audience while also apologising for failing to recognise her earlier.

“You guys will be surprised to see who’s here, watching. Should I reveal?,” Arijit asked, evoking a resounding “yes” from the crowd. “I should reveal in a very nice way. Can we have the camera there? I was trying to recognise [her] as I have seen this person somewhere. And it turns out, I had sung for her. Ladies and gentlemen, Mahira Khan is sitting right in front of us,” he said, as the crowd erupted in cheers. As the camera cut to her face, a visibly overwhelmed Mahira waved at the crowd, blushing.

“Think about it… I was singing her song ‘Zaalima’ (from Raees) and it’s her song and she was singing and standing and I couldn’t recognise her. I am so sorry. My gratitude you came here… thank you so much,” he said.

Composed by JAM8, penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya, and sung by Arijit Singh and Harshdeep Kaur, “Zaalima” was the most celebrated track in Raees. A romantic track, “Zaalima” featured SRK and Mahira as their characters Raees Alam and Aasiya Qazi, respectively, revelling in their love for each other.
