Ranveer Singh appeared in the music video for rapper SlowCheeta’s new track, “Kar De Kaa,” but with a twist. The seven-minute video, shared on YouTube on Thursday, also includes scripted behind-the-scenes glimpses of its shoot, which includes being shut for not having permissions, a guest appearance by SlowCheeta’s wife, actor Shweta Tripathi, and finally, Ranveer’s appearance. The video begins with a quick glimpse of Ranveer’s entry, before stopping abruptly, and admitting that viewers tend to stick around only when they see an eye-grabbing opening. The video promises that Ranveer will return later, and launches into its narrative.

SlowCheeta performs “Kar De Kaa” in a studio, at a movie theatre, and then at a bar. He’s dragged off the counter by a bouncer, who says that the crew doesn’t have permission to shoot. They make their escape, but their cameras are confiscated. The narrative is interspersed with the finished music video itself. After running out of money, SlowCheeta gets a call from a sponsor, where he’s presented with a deal. He gladly accepts, and the video manages to integrate a watch as well.

It then cuts to Ranveer bumping into SlowCheeta, who calls in a favour and asks him to do a two-minute cameo in the video. Ranveer agrees, but reluctantly. After struggling with SlowCheeta’s lyrics, he says that he’d prefer rapping only the hook. But the director appears to be unimpressed with his energy. A sarcastic Ranveer calls him ‘sasta Nolan’, while SlowCheeta defuses the tension. Ranveer then gets on a call with his manager, and seems to complain about the situation that he’s found himself in.

Ranveer is the co-founder of a music label called IncInk; the company is behind “Kar De Kaa” as well, which explains the self-deprecating Ranveer cameo. The actor became synonymous with desi rap after starring in the film Gully Boy, inspired by the lives of Mumbai street rappers Divine and Naezy. Directed by Zoya Akhtar, Gully Boy was instrumental in introducing rooted rap music to the masses, and was selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars in 2019.
