Kapil Sharma and Sunil Grover burying the hatchet after six long years is proving to be a magic potion for Kapil’s new gig, The Great Indian Kapil Show. This week the show saw brothers and Bollywood actors Vicky Kaushal and Sunny Kaushal swinging by Kap’s Cafe, but it was Sunil Grover who stole the spotlight and emerged as the real star of the show.

The 4th episode of the show, with a runtime of 50 minutes, bore a striking resemblance to Kapil’s previous shows – Comedy Nights With Kapil and The Kapil Sharma Show. For starters, it kicked off with a sketch comedy gig featuring Sunil Grover portraying a lost woman searching for her husband at the airport. Kapil and Sunil’s hilarious banter set the perfect tone for the show, reminding fans of what they’ve been missing for the last six years.

There’s an unmistakable rhythm between the two comedians, forged from years of knowing each other. Their banter reaches new heights of hilarity when it becomes impromptu, often leading them to break character and share a laugh in the middle of their act, making their audience a part of their process. For instance, in a scene when Vicky Kaushal’s one-liner throws the script into disarray, Sunil quickly breaks character and glances at Kapil with a helpless smile, saying, “Sara script he kharab kar dia (He ruined the whole script).” This moment had Vicky and the audience in stitches.

Sunil Grover later returned in the character of Engineer Chumbak Mittal. This segment saw the two comedians take hilarious jabs at each other with Sunil exposing Kapil Sharma and Archana Puran Singh’s strategy of laughing-out-loud to make the show appear funny. The writing deserves credit here as it doesn’t just allow Kapil to poke fun at his colleagues but gives them an equal chance to call out his tricks and shortcomings, making the banter more conversational and authentic.

While Sunil Grover undoubtedly stole the show in this episode, Krushna Abhishek, portraying a desperate air hostess, also delivered some hilarious one-liners, including a rib-tickling joke about Vicky and Sunny’s father, Sham Kaushal. However, characters like Kiku Sharda’s Chef Dhaniya Lal and Rajiv Thakur’s nameless attendant fell short, lacking impactful lines and serving more as fillers than integral parts of the show. Although Chef Dhaniya Lal still gets a respectable screen time, Rajiv Thakur’s character has been reduced to mere punctuation in this series so far.

While the sketch comedy segments in the 4th episode seemed a bit lackluster compared to the uproarious humour of the 3rd episode, which still stands out as the most hilarious installment of The Great Indian Kapil Show, the talk-show portion of the latest episode also didn’t quite hit the mark. Kapil’s fans rely on him to effortlessly draw out entertaining anecdotes from his superstar guests. However, in this episode, aside from a bizarre ‘Gutter story’, the Kaushal brothers remained relatively reserved and failed to match the energy of the show.

The next episode will see Aamir Khan as the guest. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that the makers maintain the high quality of the sketch comedy gigs and ensure active participation from their guests. You can watch The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix.
