Maidaan, starring Ajay Devgn, has been struggling at the box office since its release one week ago. Opening with Rs 4.50 crore on the first day, the film witnessed a decline, earning Rs 2.75 crore on day two. However, there was a surge over the weekend, with over a 100 percent jump on Saturday, with the sports drama bringing in Rs 5.75 crore, and following it up with Rs 6.40 crore on Sunday.

Maidaan faced another decline on Monday, only managing to collect Rs 1.5 crore. Subsequently, on Tuesday and Wednesday, it earned Rs 1.6 crore and Rs 2 crore, respectively, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. The total collection in India now stands at Rs 27.10 crore.  Maidaan  had an overall 14.30 percent Hindi occupancy on Wednesday. The film clashed with Akshay Kumar-starrer Bade Miyan Chote Miyan at the box office. The Ali Abbas Zafar directorial has managed to mint Rs 48.20 crore in India so far, and is also struggling.

Maidaan marked Ajay’s weakest opening since Runaway 34 in 2022. Runaway 34 managed to collect Rs 22 crore after one week and Rs 32.96 crore in its entire theatrical run. Ajay’s Drishyam 2, on the other hand, minted Rs 104 crore after one week.

It’s uncertain whether the film can leverage the Cinema Lover’s Day offer, with multiplexes offering tickets at Rs 99 on April 19. However, the release of Love Sex Aur Dhoka 2 and Do Aur Do Pyaar on the same day will add further competition. Maidaan also stars Priyamani in pivotal role, and is  is based on the life of football coach Syed Abdul Rahim, who led the Indian football team to glory in the 1950s and ’60s.

Indian Express’ film critic Shubhra Gupta gave the film 2.5 stars. A part of the review read, “Ajay Devgn plays Syed Abdul Rahim with a patent sincerity and only a hint of the slo-mo swagger. His rag-tag team has the kind of composition so syncretic that it makes you ache with nostalgia.”
