Filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee opened up about his fascination for the adult star Niks Indian, and the provocative social media influencer Urfi Javed. Dibakar reached out to Urfi and offered her a role in his latest film, LSD 2, after being impressed with her online persona. In an interview, the filmmaker also spoke about the repression of erotic fantasies, and what he learned about this during his research for LSD 2.

Asked about why he chose to cast Urfi in the film, Dibakar said in an appearance on the Dostcast podcast, “When you create a world in a film, if you involve some stalwart of that world in its creation, it only enhances the reality… I used to watch Urfi’s feeds because I could tell that she enjoys being provocative. You can see it in her face, she knows exactly what she’s doing. She knows what she’s saying with her clothes, she knows who she’s triggering with her get-up. I used to enjoy that.”

Dibakar said that he reached out to Urfi, and said that while he isn’t a big director who can deliver a hit, he would love for her to play a version of herself in the film. “I wanted somebody who could laugh at themselves, or at least comment on themselves, and she was game,” he said. Dibakar also spoke about his fascination for Niks Indian, whom he was surprised to discover isn’t a foreigner.

He said, “I was searching for adult content, and I saw an American-looking guy. The whole scene looked very American, and then, he opens his mouth and very pure North Indian Hindi comes out. I was shocked. You can’t tell his ethnicity when you look at him, but there he was, speaking Hindi. I started imagining what led him to become a porn star in the US, did he go there to pursue his MBA, did he go there to become an engineer?” Dibakar said that the ‘erotic fantasies’ of Indians have been repressed. “And when you repress our fantasies, our sexuality and desire, it’ll lead to violence,” he said.

Starring a cast full of newcomers, LSD 2, like the first film, is separated into three thematically connected chapters. The film will be released in theatres on April 19.
