The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has initiated a criminal investigation into the March 26 Baltimore bridge collapse, according to news agency Reuters.
Reuters attributed the report to Washington Post, that cited two US officials familiar with the matter.
On March 26, the bridge collapsed in Baltimore Harbor when a massive Singapore-flagged container vessel named Dali, crippled by a power loss rammed into Francis Scott Key Bridge, forcing closure of one of the busiest ports on the US Eastern Seaboard. Six bridge workers went missing in the accident in Patapsco River and are presumed dead.
The investigation will at least partly focus on the Dali cargo ship and whether its crew left the port in Baltimore knowing the ship had serious problems with its systems, the Post said. Representatives for the FBI could not be immediately reached to comment on the report.
A 22-member Indian crew was aboard the container when the tragedy struck.
The head of the US National Transportation Safety Board separately told Congress last week that it had interviewed key cargo ship personnel as part of its investigation of the crash.
