Even as India awaits the release of Monkey Man, Priyanka Chopra has put out her glorious review of the film, calling Dev Patel’s directorial an “impressive debut”. The action-thriller, starring and directed by Slumdog Millionaire actor Dev Patel, released in the US on April 5.

Monkey Man stars Dev Patel as Kid who vows vengeance against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother.  The film was earlier set to release on April 19 in India, but there is no release date in sight for the film as it awaits clearance from the CBFC, reportedly due to violence, sexual scenes and references to Hindu religion and mythology.

Priyanka Chopra took to Instagram and shared a reel of the film on her story, writing, “Bravo Dev Patel! What an impressive debut!” The actor also tagged actors Sobhita Dhulipala, Sikandar Kher, Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Makarand Deshpande and the film’s executive producer Jordan Peele.

Earlier, speaking at SXSW, Dev Patel had explained how Monkey Man is about faith and chronicles “what’s going on in India.” He had said, “It’s really a revenge film about faith. How faith can be a beautiful teacher for the uneducated. For a kid that grew up in a forest, a mother can inspire the child with stories, iconography, capture his imagination, but at the same time faith can be weaponised and monetised. Personally, for me, I hope I don’t get in trouble for this, for me Hinduism is a beautiful philosophy, and what’s going on in India, we touch on all of these things and try and give a voice to the voiceless.”

According to the film’s official synopsis, Monkey Man follows an anonymous young man, Dev, who works at an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash.

“After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him,” the synopsis reads.
