Nayanthara, already a superstar in South Indian cinema, made her highly anticipated Bollywood debut alongside Shah Rukh Khan in the blockbuster hit of 2023, Jawan. In a recent interview, the actor shared that she had been waiting for the right opportunity to venture into Hindi cinema, and Jawan seemed like the perfect fit. She admitted that the chance to work with SRK was a major draw for her, like it is for many others, as she has always been a big fan of the Badshah of Bollywood.

During an interaction with Hello magazine, Nayanthara revealed that the director of Jawan, Atlee, whom she considers like family, approached her for the lead role in the film. She said, “I was looking for a film like Jawan which is a commercial venture with a huge star. At the same time, I was also keen on a meaty role where I get to kick some ass.”

While Nayanthara received praise for her performance in Jawan, fans expressed concern about her character being overshadowed by Deepika Padukone’s extended cameo in the film. Despite the argument, Nayanthara acknowledged that SRK’s star power was a significant factor in the film’s success. She expressed her admiration for him, saying, “Who is not his fan? We have all grown up watching his films and we all love them. Apart from being the huge star that he is, I really admire the fact that he respects women a lot.”

Jawan went on to become the highest-grossing film of 2023, raking in Rs 1,148 crore worldwide. Despite the phenomenal box office numbers, Nayanthara remained grounded. She remarked, “I was pretty sure that Jawan would create a huge impact. After working so many years in the industry you know when a film is going to work and vice versa.”

Nayanthara’s previous film, Annapoorani: The Goddess of Food, released in theatres on December 1, 2023, and received mixed reviews from critics. However, after its streaming debut on Netflix, the film faced controversy and was taken down worldwide due to accusations of hurting Hindu sentiments.

Looking ahead, Nayanthara has exciting projects in her pipeline, including Test and Mannangatti Since 1960. Test, directed by S Sashikanth, features R Madhavan and Siddharth in the lead roles alongside Nayanthara. Mannangatti Since 1960, helmed by YouTuber Dude Vicky, boasts a stellar cast including Yogi Babu, Devadarshini, Gouri Kishan, Narendra Prasath, and others.
