Veteran actor Ranjeet was known for playing negative characters in the movies, especially during the 1970s and 1980s, and in a recent interview, the actor shared that even though most of his on-screen characters showed him drinking and smoking, he never had a drop of alcohol in his life. He also shared that despite being a teetotaler, he would host parties for his friends in the movie industry almost every single day. Ranjeet said that all the top stars of this era were fond of alcohol, and since his house was centrally located and always had its doors open, people would find it comfortable to hang out there.

“My parents lived in Delhi and I lived in Juhu, so everyone would gather there in the evening. There were no inhibitions or formalities or whatever,” he shared in a chat with ANI, and said that it wasn’t just the male actors who would gather there, but also the female actors. “Reena Roy would make paranthas, Parveen Babi would make drinks, Moushumi Chatterjee would make fish, Neetu Kapoor would make bhindi, it used to be that kind of atmosphere,” he said, adding, “Name any hero and he was there.” Ranjeet shared that Sunil Dutt, Raaj Kumar, Sanjay Khan, Feroz Khan, Dharmendra, Shatrughan Sinha, would all come over for these parties.

“People like Rajesh Khanna would drink one-two bottles in a night,” he said. Ranjeet said that he would work multiple shifts in a day, and when he would come back home, the party would be in full swing already. “I was blessed. I believed that the house that welcomes guests is blessed by god. I had enough space so I would entertain people. There was enough staff also,” he said.

When asked how these actors could function the next day, Ranjeet said, “The heroes wouldn’t wake up before 2 pm. For a 10 am shift, all these heroes would come at lunch time, have lunch and then start shooting.” He mentioned that this was one of the primary reasons why he worked in multiple films at the same time as he could travel from set to set and finish his work, as opposed to sitting around and waiting for the hero to show up.

Ranjeet is known for appearing in films such as Dharmatama, Namak Halaal, Sharaabi, Lawaris, among many others.
