Would you believe pop star Rihanna, a year before she made her debut in Jamnagar at Ambanis, was in Noormahal Punjab shooting for an Imtiaz Ali film? You would, if Diljit Dosanjh is telling the story. The actor singer on Saturday posted a throwback video from the sets of his film Amar Singh Chamkila, where he addressed his co-star Parineeti Chopra as Rihanna.
In the new Imtiaz Ali feature, Diljit plays the titular Punjabi musician, while Parineeti stars as Amarjot, his musical partner and wife. The video features the two actors in Punjab, after their shoot.
As Diljit sings a Punjabi song, Parineeti starts grooving with the microphone like a rockstar on stage. Later, Diljit jokes that the AR Rahman track ‘Vida Karo’ from the film is dedicated to Parineeti. “Ye film se nikal chuki hai, ye inka last day hai. (She is done with the film. This is her last day.)”
Imtiaz, who is not in the frame, can be heard saying that the crew should sing the song for her, as the team then joins in singing the Arijit Singh number. Diljit took to Instagram and captioned the video, “Amarjot Ch Rihanna Aa Gai C 😈 Chamkila 12th April Only on @netflix_in.”

Amar Singh Chamkila follows the untold true story of Punjab’s original rockstar of the masses, who emerged from the shadows of poverty and rose to the heights of popularity in the 80s through his biggest asset– music. He was gunned down at the age of 27. The film is now gearing to release on April 12 on Netflix.
This will be Imtiaz Ali’s first release post pandemic, after his 2020 romantic drama Love Aaj Kal 2 starring Sara Ali Khan and Kartik Aaryan.
