Irrfan Khan‘s passing on April 29, 2020, following his prolonged battle with neuroendocrine cancer, marked the end of an era in Bollywood. Filmmaker Homi Adajania’s Angrezi Medium stands as Irrfan’s final film. In a recent interview, Homi shed light on Irrfan’s decision to continue filming despite undergoing chemotherapy and recalled his happy memories with the late actor during the shooting of the film.

In a conversation with Cyrus Broacha on his YouTube channel Cyrus Says, Homi revealed the motivation behind Irrfan’s commitment to Angrezi Medium amid his health struggles. The filmmaker said, “We knew about his cancer while we were shooting. That’s why we made the film. I asked him, ‘Why do you want to shoot knowing your predicament?’ He was on chemo and that was definitely helping. He was sort of on the mend and he said that, ‘If I don’t act, I have nothing. For me, it is a spiritual experience. This is what will keep me going.’ I spent a summer with him in London.”

Sharing how he and the team made sure that they made Irrfan laugh during the last leg of Angrezi Medium, Homi said, “I remember him then getting worse and he called me in October and said, ‘I can shoot.’ I asked him when and he said, ‘Next month.’ I was like, ‘We don’t have a second half.’ So, the reason I jumped in it was that I realised that this was our last journey together. We were very good friends and it was what he wanted and the idea was to make him laugh for three months and we did that. We did exactly that. We had a blast with him and his wife Sutapa.”

Angrezi Medium, a standalone sequel to the 2017 hit Hindi Medium, featured an ensemble cast including Radhika Madan, Deepak Dobriyal, and Kareena Kapoor Khan alongside Irrfan. Filming commenced in Udaipur on April 5, 2019, and concluded in London by July. This heartfelt film served as Irrfan’s swan song, released just before his untimely demise.
