Ajay Devgn, Jyotika and R Madhavan’s latest release, Shaitaan, witnessed a surge in its box office collections on the second day, surpassing its earnings from the release day. According to industry tracker Sacnilk’s early estimates, Shaitaan recorded an India nett collection of Rs 18.25 crore on Saturday, elevating its total domestic earnings to Rs 33 crore.

Shaitaan recorded an overall 33.65 per cent occupancy in Hindi cinemas on Saturday. The film had the highest number of screenings in the National Capital Region (NCR), totalling 1,232 shows, with an occupancy rate of 34 per cent. Maharashtra followed closely with 1,115 shows and a 42 per cent occupancy rate.

The film debuted at the box office on Friday, amassing Rs 14.75 crore in revenue. Its impressive performance on Saturday indicated a promising weekend ahead and expectations are high for Sunday’s box office figures.

Directed by Vikas Bahl, Shaitaan is a Hindi adaptation of the 2023 Gujarati horror film Vash, originally written and directed by Krishnadev Yagnik. The supernatural thriller delves into the realm of black magic.

Shaitaan is anticipated to maintain its dominance in theatres until March 15, when it will face stiff competition from Sidharth Malhotra-Disha Patani starrer Yodha. Ajay Devgn’s previous film, Bholaa, opposite Tabu, earned Rs 11 crore on its opening day and went on to gross Rs 90 crore overall. Before Bholaa, Ajay’s Drishyam 2 enjoyed immense success at the box office. While Shaitaan matched the opening day box office figures of Drishyam 2, it slightly trailed behind on the second day, with Drishyam 2 earning Rs 21.59 crore.

The Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta gave the film 2 stars in her review and wrote, “The trouble with this remake of Gujarati film ‘Vash’ is that all the ‘kaala-jaadu’ trickery is ultimately strictly window-dressing to a hero vs villain story. After whetting our appetites with a few well-staged command and control sequences in which Bodiwala, who reprises her role from ‘Vash’, holds our attention, Devgn takes over. Which makes it predictable, because how can a hero, even if he has allowed himself to be bashed up and bloodied till then, can not win?”
