Two days after the Seattle police officer who struck and killed Indian student Jaahnavi Kandula with his vehicle was let off the hook, the Consulate General of India in Seattle extended their support towards ensuring justice for the victim and her family.

A day earlier, Kandula’s family, while speaking to The Indian Express, had said, “First they joked about it, now the officer responsible has been let off. There is no justice and no closure for us. It is devastating.”

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the Consulate stated, “On the recently released investigation report of the King County Prosecution Attorney on the unfortunate death of Jaahnavi Kandula, Consulate has been in regular touch with the designated family representatives and will continue to extend all possible support in ensuring justice for Jaahnavi and her family.”

They also wrote, “We have also raised the matter strongly with local authorities, including Seattle Police for appropriate redress. The case has now been referred to Seattle City Attorney’s office for review. We await completion of Seattle Police’s administrative investigation and will continue to monitor progress on the case.”

Jaahnavi was killed on January 5 in 2023 when a police car driven by officer Kevin Dave struck her near Northeastern University’s Seattle campus. She was 23 and was pursuing a MS in Information Systems.

On Wednesday, the King County Prosecutor’s Office said they will not move forward with criminal charges against Seattle Police Officer Kevin Dave, FOX13 Seattle reported. King County Prosecuting Attorney Leesa Manion said that she believes they lack the evidence to prove a criminal case beyond a reasonable doubt, the report added.

Hailing from Halvi village in Kowthalam Mandal of Kurnool district, Jaahnavi’s parents live in Adoni, where her mother K Vijayalakshmi was a school teacher while her father K Srikanth had retired from the police department. Jaahnavi completed her B.Com in 2019 and went to the US in September 2020 to pursue the two-year MS course, which was to finish in December.
