Karan Johar is so accustomed to working in a certain budget bracket that he was ‘shocked’ to discover how much money Prime Video had allotted Dharmatic for its recent docuseries Love Storiyaan. In an interview, Dharmatic’s Content Head Somen Mishra recalled telling Karan that the entire budget for the six films in the anthology series was lower than what they had for one song in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.
In an interview with OTTPlay, he said, “Karan was already shocked by the budget when he told him what we were getting from Amazon. Karan asked, ‘Iss budget mein filmein banti hain (Are films made with this budget)?’ I said, of course. I remember telling someone that the combined budget of all our six films is less than the budget of one song of Rocky Aur Rani KIi Prem Kahaani. Either less than or equal to. I guess, it will be less than. Because Rocky Aur Rani KIi Prem Kahaani has big songs. Big studios, 200-plus people on sets.”

The six episodes in Love Storiyaan have been directed by the likes of Collin D’Cunha, Vivek Soni, Shazia Iqbal, Hardik Mehta and others. The series is inspired by real love stories shared on the Indian Love Project page on social media. Somen said that they could’ve adapted it into a narrative show, but chose to take the docu-drama approach instead.
More recently, on X, he appeared to be angry at the lack of conversation around the series, and the limited support that it has received from the industry. He wrote, “As the Insta story has expired, so I am keeping it as a post now. Just so that I don’t forget. #vengeanceismine (Ps – includes reviewers who haven’t reviewed us {good/bad/ugly doesn’t matter}, friends, foes, family, colleagues, acquaintances, filmmakers, writers, and everyone else).”
Somen recently made headlines when he said on X that Vidhu Vinod Chopra didn’t give appropriate credit to the writer of the book that his recent film, 12th Fail, was based on.
